TOUR: TRADITIONAL AYACUCHO

Tour to Ayacucho - Wari - Quinua - Vilcashuamán - Intiwatana

Ayacucho, at more than 2700 m.a.s.l., is one of the most attractive towns in the Peruvian Andes. It is a city full of tradition and history, famed for its 33 beautiful churches and bell towers, its Colonial buildings, its famous craftsmen and for having been the Capital of the Empire of the Wari Culture. The Cave of Pikimachay, where some of the first peoples of the continent settled, is near the City, and the picturesque Town of Quinua, where the Capitulation of Ayacucho, the document that sealed the Freedom of South American, was signed, is only 35km away. . Visiting Ayacucho will definitely provide pleasant, unforgettable memories for those who decide to come to this hidden corner of the Peruvian highlands.

Tour Description

All our programmes can be tailor made according to your requirements, whether regarding the length of your tour, any special interests or specific activities, flight reservations, optional destinations or tours.

DAY 01: Ayacucho: Sightseeing the city.
Collect at the bus station or airport and transfer to selected hotel. In the afternoon, Sightseeing Tour, including the Main Square, one of the largest and most beautiful in the country;and the Cathedral, with its magnificent main and side altars, decorated with beautiful gold leaf carvings, especially its pulpit which is one of the most notable in the City. Visit also the University of Huamanga; the Church of Santo Domingo, a one-nave church in the shape of a Latin cross, with its magnificent dome and Baroque altars; La Merced, with some marvellous oil paintings and La Magdalena. Then, a visit to the Monastery of Santa Teresa, which contains one of the most extraordinary Baroque altars in Peru; the Mirador of Acuchimay; the Santa Ana Handicraft Quarter and old Colonial mansions such as the Casa Olano and Casa de Jauregui y Vivanco.

DAY 02: Wari - Quinua.
After breakfast, a visit to the Wari Ruins, 22 km. from the City. This was the Capital of one of the the first Andean Empires and is an incredible complex of streets, squares, stone tombs, paths and irrigation channels, food depositories and stone structures. The tour continues with a visit to the Town of Quinua, 35 km. from Ayacucho; known for its churches built from mud bricks ("adobe"). In the Main Square there is a museum where the Capitulation of Ayacucho was signed, sealing South American Liberty from the Spanish. Later a visit to "La Pampa de la Quinua", surrounded by a eucalyptus forest. This Plain is a National Historic Sanctuary, as the Battle of Ayacucho, the final battle of the wars of American Liberation against the Spanish, was fought here. Return to the hotel.

DAY 03: Vilcashuaman - Intiwatana.
Early in the morning travel by bus from Ayacucho to the small Town of Vilcashuaman, 120 Km. South of Ayacucho. This place was an important Inca City on the Inca Road to the Chinchasuyo (the Coast). The City was probably built by Inca Pachacutec and the buildings are very similar to those that exist in Cusco. The tour will include a visit to the Temple of the Sun and the Moon, and the Ushno or Inca altar, unique in Peru for its architectural design and beauty. Lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon an excursion to Intiwatana, this was an Inca Residential Centre very close to Vilcashuaman in the Vischongo District.
Visits here to the Inca Palace, the Tower, the Inca Baths and the Lagoon near the Palace. Late afternoon return by bus to the City of Ayacucho for overnight

DAY 04: Back to Lima.
After breakfast, transfer to the bus station or airport for return to Lima or next destination. End of our services.
