Trekking from Olleros to Chavin (three days)
General description

On the trek from Olleros to Chavin you can revitalize an old, pre-inca route of pilgrimage. This hike has characteristic pre-inca routes that lead to the ruins of Chavin in the Conchucos valley. The archeological center of Chavin is one of the oldest and most enigmatical examples of architecture in Peru and dates back to between 1000 to 300 years BC. It is considered the source of subsequent civilisations like Recuay and Wari. On this three days trek along the Uquian valley, you can admire typical small localities and mountains like Pucaraju, Shaqsha and Yanamarey

Access: Olleros (from Huaraz)
Exit: Chavin (return by bus to Huaraz/Caraz)
Minimum altitude: 3140m (Chavin)

Maximum altitude: 4700m (Yanashallash pass).

ITINERARY

Day 1
Approaching the place Olleros (3420m) by bus, the starting point of this trek
Following the Quebrada de Uquian slowly upward until Sacracancha (3850m), the first camp site
Total time of hiking: 4 to 5 hours.

Day 2
Start of the large ascension with small treks to arrive at the Yanashallash pass (4700m). This day you hike a difference in elevation of 850m. Descent to the Honqopampa valley to the Honqopampa camp site (4100m)
Total time of hiking: 6 to 7 hours.

Day 3
Descend large valleys to the archeological center of Chavin (3140m), a place charactericed by one of the oldest cultures and trials of Peru. Visiting a guided tour in the archeological center.
We return by bus to Huaraz / Caraz.
Total time of hiking: 9 to 10 hours.
