Day 1
Transport by bus, we cross Andean villages with typical architecture until the village of Llamac, place of the first camp (3300m).
Total time: 4 to 5 hours
Day 2
The trek starts by walking up the steep pass of Pampa Llamac (4300m), a natural point of view to see a big part of all snowcapped mountains of the Cordillera Huayhuash. This pass then descends in a long but not very steep fashion until the camp is reached, located at the shore of the lagoon of Jahuacocha (4066m).
Total time of hiking: 6 to 7 hours
Day 3
Ascension along the right shore of the lagoons of Jahuacocha and Solteracocha until the pass of Sambunya (4750m) with an impressive view of the snowcapped Yerupaja, Jifishanca and Rondoy. Then a walk down until the camp of Cuartelhuain and Matacancha (4100m).
Total time of hiking: 6 to 7 hours
Day 4
After a fast ascension, we reach the pass of Cacananpunta (4700m) and along the valley "Quebrada Caliente" we walk down until the shores of the lagoon of Mitucocha (4250m). The camp site is situated at the foot of the snow covered Jifishanca.
Total time of hiking: 5 to 6 hours
Day 5
After a short descent, we climb the pass of Punta Carhuac(4650m) and then walk down to the shores of lake Carhuacocha (4138m), the camp site is located where we can see the snowcapped Yerupaja and Siula.
Total time of hiking: 5 to 6 hours
Day 6
We skirt the lake and ascend the Siula pass (4800m). Then we walk down to the Huayhuash camp site (4300m). Alternatively, it is possible to walk over the Carnicero pass (4600m).
Total time of hiking: 6 to 7 hours
Day 7
Ascension to the Portachuelo pass (4750m) and beginning of a long descent to the Viconga lake. After a short ascension, we reach the camp site, Pumarinri (4400m). In this place, it is possible to have a bath in thermal waters (in small handmade wells).
Total time of hiking: 5 to 6 hours
Day 8
Descent along the Pumarinri valley to a small pass (4150m), located in the higher part of the locality Cajatambo. It is the starting point of the trek. We stay in a hostel.
Total time of hiking: 4 to 5 hours
Day 9
Return by bus to Huaraz/Caraz or to Lima.
Total time: 8 to 9 hours. |
