GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Trekking to Alpamayo mountain Ancash Peru

The trek from Hualcayan to Pomabamba, better known as the Alpamayo trek, is one of the most attractive of the region and includes six high passes, two of them above 4800m.

This circuit goes across the Cordillera Blanca from east (callejon de Huaylas) to west (callejon de los Conchucos). During this hike you can admire pre-inca traces, attractive lagoons like Cullicocha, Jancanrurish, the Safuna lagoons, snowcapped mountains like Santa Cruz and Milluacocha, the impressive view of one of the worlds most beautiful snowy peak: Alpamayo, Los Pukahircas and others. This scenery of high altitude also shows a lot of vegetation and fauna, as well as typical architecture and customs of the villages on both sides of the Cordillera

Access: Hualcayan (from Caraz)
Exit: village of Pomabamba (return by bus to Yungay/Caraz)
Minimum altitude: 2950m (village of P.)
Maximum altitude: 4850m (Cullicocha Pass).

ITINERARY

Day 1
Transport by bus from Caraz to Hualcayan (3160m), this takes about two hours.
We start the trek by walking up to the first camp site, Jamacuna (4010m).
Duration: 4 to 5 hours.

Day 2
On the way up to the Cullicocha pass (4850m), we can see a lagoon of the same name and another two. Then descent to the following camp site, Osoruri (4550m)
Duration: 6 to 7 hours.

Day 3
Within one hour, we walk up to the Cullicocha pass (4850m), then take the long descent to reach the Jancanrurish valley. Camp site on 4250m. Prevailing view of snow covered Alpamayo.
Duration: 7 to 8 hours.

Day 4
Ascension to the Caracara pass (4830m), descent to the Mesapampa valley and after reaching a small pass (4460m), we walk down to the camp site Huillca (4050m).
Duration: 7 to 8 hours.

Day 5
Hike to the small Huillca pass and then to the Collota pass on an average altitude of 4300m. Descent to the camp site Yanacollpa (3900m).
Duration: 6 to 7 hours.

Day 6
Descent to the Yanacolpa valley until the village of Pomabamba is reached (2950m). A particular characteristic of this place are the thermal waters.
Duration: 5 to 6 hours.

Day 7
Return to the callejon de Huaylas (by bus) by crossing typical small towns of this area and the Portachuelo pass (4767m). We go on to the Llanganuco valley to finally reach Caraz.
Duration: 4 to 5 hours.

Optional day (recommended)
Spend this day in the Jancanrurish valley instead of day four. Have some time of your own to explore the Jancanrurish lagoon and to walk up to the base camp of snowcapped Alpamayo.
