ITINERARY

Day 1.-

You will be met by your local guide and taken in a rickshaw taxi to our office in the heart of the colourful city of Puerto Maldonado where we prepare for our trip. We transfer to the port of the large river, Madre de Dios, where our boat is waiting to take us to our first camp site, a small island in the middle of this great jungle tributary of the Amazon, a journey of about an hour and a half. We make camp for the night and then explore the trails to see the nocturnal animals: frogs, toads, insects and monkeys and enjoy the melody of the jungle night. Return to camp, supper and bed.

Day 2.-

We awake to the sound of the animals and set out once again in the jungle in search of the prolific monkeys and birds on the island whilst our camp cook prepares a delicious breakfast that will be waiting for us on our return to camp. After breakfast we set off for Taricaya, a research centre manager by students from all over the world and local biologists and staff. The narrow trail there will take us to one of the famous canopy or rope bridges that hang high above the tree tops; the rope bridge is 90m long and rises to a height of 45m above the jungle floor and is anchored to the top of a kapok tree, one of the tallest trees in the jungle From this great height we can appreciate the jungle from another perspective and catch sight of birds that live in the tree tops. On our return to the research centre we will have the opportunity to see some of the animals, loose or in specially designed cages that mimic their natural habitat that the centre is treating or re-educating for re-introduction to their natural habitat. Many of them are already loose but stay within the grounds of the centre as they don’t want to abandon the doctors who have cared for them so well. Lunch is served at the centre and then we return to our boat for a trip to a native community of the Ese’Eja tribe, where we will share briefly their life and close relationship with the jungle, eating supper and camping with them on their land.

Day 3.-

We rise very early and, after a delicious breakfast we take our leave of a new friends we set out for Lake Sandoval, an ox bow lake of great natural beauty located within the National Reserve of Tambopata. The walk from the river bank of 5 km along a well kept trail affords the opportunity to observe parrots and macaws that perch on trees greeting the sunrise and breakfasting on the minerals that are found on the palm trees lining the path. A canoe awaits us on the shores of the lake to take us to a specially designed tower on the lake shore from which we will have a 360° view over the lake and natural park area. After returning to the shore we will bathe in the warm waters of the lake before serving a typical lunch. During the afternoon we will explore the western part of the lake in search of more wildlife, monkeys and most especially the river otters that live in and around this lake and who were on the verge of extinction before finding a home in this protected spot. Return to the boat and then Puerto Maldonado. Transfer to a previously chosen hotel. Bed.

Day 4.-

Transfer to the airport, end of an unforgettable jungle experience.
