MANU BIOSPHERE RESERVE GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION
The inhabitants of the Palotoa-Teparo Native Community belong to the Matsiguenga ethnic group of the Arawak linguistic family. The term “Matsiguenga” means “people”, and refers mainly to human beings in general, but also to the spiritual entities of human form which, in the traditional Matsiguenga cosmology, form part of the everyday universe that surrounds us.The Matsiguenga ethnic group is currently composed of approximately 12 000 people living in the departments of Cusco and Madre de Dios, with only a small part of the group located in the area of the Alto Madre de Dios River. The language spoken by the community is Matsiguenga, although the majority also speaks Spanish. They have a school which imparts official primary education in Spanish. The Palotoa-Teparo community is located on the left bank of the Palotoa River, a tributary of the Alto Madre de Dios River, an hour and a half boat trip north-east of the town of Santa Cruz, which is nine-hours drive from Cusco. The northern boundary of this community borders the Manu National Park, a protected natural area characterised by its high biodiversity and where natural resources are well-conserved. This location was established in 1999. Earlier, they had settled in nearby areas where they experienced territorial disputes with other native community. Currently, the community consists of approximately 94 people. Their main productive activities are orientated primarily towards their own consumption and are based on agriculture, hunting, fishing and gathering of forest products.
